The flowers

In paintings, the artists convey messages, or develop the story thanks to the representation of flowers.
Millais, in his painting, Ophelia, painted a red poppy representing the death and the sleep of Ophelia,
who had drowned.

Other example : In the "vanitas" (stil life), the tulip represents love, and so in vanitas it's ephemeral love and the  fleeting quality of life.

  1. A very interesting topic, which you should develop by giving more examples of what flowers symbolise in paintings!
